Chilton County, AL
County# 11
The Upper Creek Indians were the first known inhabitants of what is now Chilton County. Creek burial grounds are noticeable around the Union Grove community, near I-65. The descendants of the Creeks still reside on this land and have documents to link them back to the land as far back as 1665. The oldest recorded burials are those of the Rocky Mount community in Chilton County. Some sources have Revolutionary Soldier Johnathan Clowers, buried at Caviness Gardens (194-NE), as the oldest recorded burial. He was buried in 1836. There are several unmarked graves throughout the county that could possibly be older.
Cemeteries are plentiful throughout Chilton County. As you can see, Chilton County has its share of interesting people buried here. There are several Revolutionary Soldiers buried in the county and your help is needed to locate and preserve these sites. There are also close to, if not over, one thousand Confederate Soldiers buried across our great county. Although I have not run across any Union Soldiers buried here, there are said to be a hand full.
